Students from Schreiber Public School gathered at the Schreiber Public Library for the annual Blue Spruce Reading Program voting day. The event marked the culmination of months of reading, discussion, and shared stories, giving students the opportunity to vote for their favourite book from this year’s Blue Spruce selection. Coral Cole, the school’s library technician, has been involved in the programme for over 10 years.

Students were told to cast their ballots, carefully reviewing the ten nominated titles displayed on the tables. Ballot cards were filled out, folded, and placed into the ballot box, turning the library into a place not just for reading, but for participation and decision-making. A small celebration accompanied the voting, with certificates presented and cupcakes enjoyed as students marked the occasion.

Georgette Cebrario from the Historical Society and Quilters group presented Head Librarian Linda Williamson, with a cheque to go towards the purchase of more books for the kids.

The Blue Spruce Reading Program has long been a collaboration between Schreiber Public School and Schreiber Public Library, encouraging young readers to engage with a wide range of books and develop a lasting love of reading. Librarians, staff, and volunteers were on hand to support the event, which has become a highlight of the school year for many students.

After all votes were counted and sent off for verification. Back at the school, anticipation filled the room, and the results were finally announced.

This year’s Blue Spruce Reading Program winner is Lost Stick.
