The Township of Schreiber held a productive Council and Committee of the Whole meeting on March 10, 2026, focusing on community recreation funds, museum enhancements, and essential water infrastructure upgrades. The meeting opened with a respectful acknowledgment of the Robinson Superior Treaty territory and the traditional lands of the Anishinaabe and Métis.A major portion of the evening’s business involved financial housekeeping, specifically moving surpluses into the Recreation Committee Reserve Fund. Additional funds from net apparel sales and the CCR event surplus were also redirected to support future community recreation efforts.

The Discovery Centre is also looking forward to a busy season. Economic Development Officer Jamie presented recommendations to move the responsibility of the Highway site to the Discovery Centre Committee to streamline funding and sign construction. Furthermore, the museum will trial extended hours—staying open until 8:00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays—run entirely by volunteers. The committee is also researching the possibility of acquiring a donated caboose to add to the museum’s collection.

In more serious business, the Director of Operations briefed Council on critical water plant maintenance. Following a provincial inspection, the township is mandated to conduct a “coagulant study” to improve water quality and reduce chemical byproducts. Additionally, Council discussed the urgent need to replace the filter media and strainers in the water plant’s 1983-era pressure filters. Officials noted that the filters are not currently operating at optimum performance, and upgrades are necessary to avoid potential failure.

On the community front, Council discussed making public skating free from Monday to Friday during the March break. Looking ahead, nominations for the “Senior of the Year Award” are now open. While the Senior Active Living Coordinator will provide input, the final decision rests with Council and will be announced at the next meeting. The meeting also saw the passage of several bylaws related to the upcoming election period, regulating sign placement and the use of corporate resources. Council concluded the session by reviewing the 2025 expense report, which showed the township ended the year under budget.
